Andalusite Brick: Features, Properties and Industrial Applications

1. What is Andalusite Brick?

Andalusite brick is a high-performance refractory brick made from natural andalusite mineral as the main raw material. During high-temperature firing, andalusite produces irreversible mullite transformation, forming a dense and interlocking needle-like mullite structure inside the brick. This special microstructure enables andalusite bricks to maintain excellent thermal stability, mechanical strength and volume stability under long-term high-temperature working conditions. Compared with traditional high-alumina bricks, andalusite refractory bricks have better thermal shock resistance, lower high-temperature creep and longer service life, and are widely used in various industrial high-temperature kiln linings.

2. Core Physical and Chemical Properties

2.1 Excellent High Temperature Stability

Andalusite brick has a high refractoriness and high load softening temperature. The secondary mullitization reaction continues at high temperature, which continuously optimizes the internal structure of the brick and effectively avoids structural loosening and deformation under long-term high-temperature load. Its permanent linear change rate is extremely low, ensuring the overall stability of the furnace lining.

2.2 Superior Thermal Shock Resistance

Thanks to the self-generated mullite network structure, andalusite brick can withstand frequent rapid temperature changes, repeated heating and cooling cycles without cracking or peeling. This feature makes it very suitable for intermittent production kilns and equipment with frequent start and stop.

2.3 Low High-temperature Creep Performance

Andalusite refractory brick maintains stable shape and strength under long-term high temperature and pressure. The high-temperature creep value is far lower than ordinary high-alumina bricks, which can effectively prevent kiln lining collapse, deformation and tile bulging problems, greatly extending the service cycle of industrial furnaces.

2.4 Good Chemical Corrosion Resistance

The product has strong resistance to alkali erosion, slag penetration and flue gas corrosion. It can resist the erosion of various acidic and weakly alkaline slags, and has good adaptability in reducing atmosphere such as CO and hydrogen. It is not easy to be eroded and penetrated by kiln materials and flue gas during long-term use.

3. Advantages of Andalusite Brick

  • High overall strength, wear resistance and compression resistance, not easy to damage during masonry and use
  • Ultra-low high-temperature creep, stable furnace lining structure, fewer maintenance times
  • Excellent thermal shock resistance, suitable for fluctuating temperature working conditions
  • Strong anti-alkali and anti-slag performance, widely adaptable to various industrial kilns
  • Long service life, effectively reducing customer’s refractory replacement cost and downtime loss

4. Main Application Fields

4.1 Cement Industry

Andalusite bricks are widely used in cement rotary kiln preheater, decomposition zone, kiln inlet and transition zone. They effectively resist alkali erosion and thermal shock, solve the problem of frequent peeling of high-alumina bricks, and stabilize long-term kiln operation.

4.2 Steel and Metallurgy Industry

Applied in hot blast stove, blast furnace upper part, steel ladle lining, tundish and other key parts. The stable high-temperature performance improves the overall operation efficiency of metallurgical equipment.

4.3 Glass and Ceramic Industry

Suitable for glass furnace regenerator, ceramic tunnel kiln, shuttle kiln and high-temperature flue. It can resist high-temperature flame scouring and ensure uniform kiln temperature.

4.4 Other Industrial Kilns

It is also commonly used in lime rotary kilns, carbon baking furnaces, coking furnaces and power plant boiler high-temperature sections, becoming a cost-effective upgraded refractory material.

5. Product Grades and Customization

We supply multiple grades of andalusite bricks with different alumina content, bulk density and strength indicators to meet different temperature and corrosive working conditions. Standard sizes, special-shaped bricks and customized sizes are all available. Strict raw material inspection and full-process quality control ensure stable batch quality and reliable delivery cycle.

6. Summary

Andalusite brick is an upgraded refractory product between ordinary high-alumina brick and mullite brick. With stable high-temperature performance, excellent thermal shock resistance and low creep characteristics, it has become the preferred lining material for medium and high-temperature industrial kilns. It can significantly reduce furnace maintenance frequency, improve production efficiency and create long-term economic benefits for end users.
