Corundum Plastic Refractory – High-Temp Wear-Resistant Ramming Mass for Furnace Lining
1. What Is Corundum Plastic Refractory?
Corundum plastic refractory, also known as corundum plastic ramming mass, is a kind of unshaped monolithic refractory made from high-purity fused corundum or sintered corundum aggregates as the main raw material, matched with fine powder, composite binders and plasticizers.
Different from castables and air-setting mortars, this product features permanent plasticity under normal temperature. It does not require adding water on site for mixing. With excellent malleability, it can be directly rammed, troweled and shaped on furnace linings without complex pouring, vibration or long curing procedures.
2. Core Raw Material Advantages of Corundum Base
The main component of corundum plastic refractory is α-Al₂O₃ with ultra-high alumina content, bringing prominent performance edges compared with ordinary clay-based plastic refractory:
- Ultra high refractoriness: The melting point of corundum reaches above 2050℃, suitable for long-term service under 1600℃–1800℃ high-temperature working conditions;
- Outstanding abrasion resistance: Dense corundum aggregate structure resists scouring of high-temperature flue gas, molten slag and solid materials;
- Good chemical stability: Weak reaction with acid and neutral slags, anti-oxidation and anti-corrosion inside high-temperature kilns;
- Low thermal shrinkage: Small linear shrinkage after baking, less cracking and peeling of furnace lining during long-period operation.

Corundum plastic refractory is widely used in high-temperature industrial equipment that demands wear resistance and rapid repair:
- Industrial heating furnaces, roller kilns, shuttle kilns, high-temperature tunnel kilns;
- Steel industry: Heating furnace hearth, furnace arch, slag line area, runner lining local repair;
- Thermal power plants: Boiler furnace lining, flue high-temperature section, ash erosion area;
- Non-ferrous metal smelting furnaces, ceramic firing kilns, petrochemical high-temperature reactors;
- Emergency patch repair of irregular curved surfaces, anchor brick gaps, worn and collapsed lining areas.
5. Construction Instructions
- Surface treatment: Clean up dust, loose residues and residual slag on the original furnace lining surface to ensure tight bonding;
- Direct forming: Take corundum plastic refractory blocks, tamp layer by layer with ramming tools, compact the material to eliminate internal gaps;
- Surface finishing: Smooth the surface with trowels after ramming to form an integrated seamless lining;
- Baking guidance: Adopt staged heating curve for baking to discharge internal moisture evenly and prevent lining burst from rapid temperature rising.
6. Comparison With Similar Unshaped Refractories
- VS Corundum castable: Castables need water mixing, vibration and long curing. Corundum plastic refractory supports instant ramming and quick furnace restart, ideal for urgent maintenance;
- VS Air-setting mortar: Mortar is for thin-layer gap filling. Corundum plastic refractory can build thick integrated lining with better wear resistance and longer service life;
- VS Ordinary clay plastic refractory: Corundum type owns much higher refractoriness and slag resistance, fit for ultra-high temperature working environments where clay plastic cannot meet demands.
7. Storage & Shelf Life Tips
Store corundum plastic refractory in cool, dry warehouses sealed away from sunlight and frost. Keep packages intact to avoid plasticizer loss caused by air exposure. Do not pile up heavy goods on top to prevent extrusion hardening. Under standard storage conditions, the valid plastic shelf life is 3–6 months.
