Impregnated Carbon Bricks: Dense Impermeable Carbon‑Based Refractory for Severe Corrosive Conditions
What Are Impregnated Carbon Bricks
Ordinary carbon bricks contain plenty of open pores, allowing molten slag, acid liquid and corrosive gas to penetrate inward and accelerate lining damage. Impregnated carbon bricks solve this weakness by filling internal micro‑pores with pitch or resin impregnant under vacuum‑pressure conditions.
The finished product retains carbon material’s natural advantages including high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion and good thermal‑shock resistance, meanwhile gaining much better impermeability. It shows stable performance against most strong acids, hydrofluoric acid, partial alkalis and molten slag. Two mainstream grades are available: pitch‑impregnated carbon bricks for high‑temperature metallurgical furnaces, and resin‑impregnated carbon bricks for low‑medium temperature chemical anti‑corrosion tanks and towers.
Core Production Workflow
Raw material preparation uses high‑purity carbon aggregates including anthracite, calcined petroleum coke and graphite, mixed with carbon‑rich binders. After fine grinding and proportioning, the mixture is pressed into bricks under high pressure. Green bricks are fired at high temperature for carbonization. The key step is vacuum pressure impregnation, where hot pitch or resin is forced into brick pores. A secondary heat‑treatment process removes volatile components and solidifies the impregnant, finally producing dense impregnated carbon bricks. Strict dimensional inspection and surface finishing are carried out before packaging and delivery.
Key Performance & Advantages
Ultra‑Low Porosity and Excellent Impermeability
The impregnation process seals most open pores. Liquid acids, salt solutions and molten slag can hardly infiltrate into brick interior. This feature prevents internal corrosion and structural pulverization, which is the biggest difference from ordinary carbon bricks.
Outstanding Chemical Corrosion Resistance
Impregnated carbon bricks resist erosion from sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, hydrofluoric acid and various mixed acid media. They also withstand attack from molten slag in steel‑making processes. Resin‑impregnated grades perform better in chemical corrosive environments, while pitch‑impregnated versions fit high‑temperature metallurgical working conditions.
High Mechanical Strength and Abrasion Resistance
High bulk density brings high cold crushing strength. The bricks can sustain heavy mechanical load, material scouring and impact. They adapt well to positions with both corrosion and physical wear, such as slag lines and tank bottoms.
Good Thermal Conductivity and Thermal‑Shock Resistance
Carbon‑based raw materials grant high thermal conductivity and low linear thermal expansion. The brick structure remains stable under frequent temperature fluctuation, resisting cracking caused by rapid heating and cooling.
Stable Volume and Dimensional Accuracy
Controlled production and post‑processing guarantee small dimensional tolerance. Accurate brick sizes simplify on‑site masonry and minimize joint gaps that become potential corrosion weak points.
Main Industrial Application Fields
Steel & Metallurgical Industry
Ideal for ladle slag line, refining furnace lining, converter slag zone, electric furnace bottom and wall, blast furnace hearth and bottom. These zones suffer severe erosion from molten steel and slag; impregnated carbon bricks effectively block slag penetration and prolong furnace campaign life.
Chemical & Fertilizer Plants
Widely used for lining of phosphoric acid reactors, acid storage tanks, pickling tanks, reaction pools and washing towers. It handles long‑term contact with hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid and other highly corrosive media, protecting concrete and metal substrate from chemical damage.
Non‑Ferrous Smelting
Applied for inner lining of aluminum, copper, lead‑zinc smelting furnaces and submerged‑arc furnaces. It copes with complex erosion from molten non‑ferrous metal and electrolyte.
Environmental Protection & Waste Treatment
Used for desulfurization absorption tower, chimney lining and acid‑containing wastewater treatment tanks in power plants. It resists corrosive acid condensate and acidic waste water.
Typical Technical Indicators
Carbon content ≥97%, ash content ≤1.5%. Bulk density ranges from 1.60‑1.90 g/cm³, apparent porosity below 5%. Cold crushing strength is normally higher than 45‑60 MPa. Standard brick dimension follows 230×113×65 mm and other common refractory sizes. Wedge bricks, curved bricks and all kinds of special‑shaped blocks can be customized according to project drawings.
Installation & Selection Guidance
Impregnated carbon bricks must be matched with special carbon‑based mortar instead of common cement mortar. Construction base surface shall be flat, dry and clean. Control masonry joint thickness strictly and ensure full joint filling to avoid medium leakage.
Customers need to confirm medium type, working temperature, acid concentration and slag composition before ordering. Pitch‑impregnated type is preferred for high‑temperature metallurgical furnaces; resin‑impregnated grade is recommended for chemical anti‑corrosion projects under medium‑low temperature.
