Magnesia-Alumina Spinel Brick: Chrome-Free Refractory for Cement Rotary Kilns
Overview
Magnesia spinel brick, also named magnesia-alumina spinel brick, is a high-performance chrome-free alkaline refractory brick sintered with high-purity sintered magnesia, fused magnesia and synthetic magnesia-alumina spinel as core raw materials. After precise particle gradation, high-pressure moulding and ultra-high temperature firing, it forms direct-bonded crystal structures inside the brick body, effectively solving the defects of poor thermal shock resistance and easy peeling of traditional magnesia bricks. As an environmentally friendly substitute for magnesia-chrome bricks, it has become the preferred lining material for cement rotary kilns, steel ladles and high-temperature industrial furnaces worldwide, fully complying with global environmental requirements for eliminating chromium pollution.
Core Production Technology
We adopt fused high-purity magnesia and synthetic spinel aggregate for batching, add composite mineralizers to optimize the microscopic structure, use automatic hydraulic pressing equipment for brick forming to ensure uniform density of each brick, and finally fire finished products in a high-temperature tunnel kiln above 1600℃. Strict whole-process QC inspection from raw material incoming inspection to finished product delivery stabilizes chemical composition and physical indexes of each batch of magnesia spinel bricks, avoiding quality fluctuation during long-term mass production.
Main Performance Advantages
1. Eco-friendly Chrome-Free Formula
Different from traditional magnesia-chrome bricks containing toxic hexavalent chromium, magnesia spinel brick does not include chromium elements in its formula. It will not produce harmful chromium pollutants during kiln operation and waste brick treatment, meeting environmental protection standards in Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and other regions, and helping manufacturing enterprises complete green production transformation smoothly.
2. Outstanding Thermal Shock Resistance & Anti-Spalling Property
The material owns low elastic modulus and small thermal expansion coefficient, which can buffer thermal stress generated by frequent temperature rise and fall inside kilns. Under repeated cold and hot cycles of industrial kilns, it is not easy to crack, peel or fall off, greatly reducing kiln shutdown maintenance frequency and saving production loss caused by lining damage. In cement kiln transition zones with drastic temperature changes, its service life is twice that of conventional dolomite bricks.
3. Strong Alkali Corrosion Resistance & Kiln Skin Hanging Capacity
Magnesia spinel brick can react with cement clinker at high temperature to form a compact protective layer on the brick surface, which prevents alkali salts such as potassium sulfate and sodium sulfate inside the kiln from penetrating into the brick body. The stable kiln skin can protect the refractory lining from erosion by high-temperature clinker and molten slag, prolonging the service cycle of kiln lining obviously.
4. High Temperature Bearing Capacity
Its refractoriness under load can reach above 1700℃, maintaining stable structural strength under high temperature and mechanical load simultaneously. It will not soften or deform when working in high-temperature sections of rotary kilns for a long time, adapting to harsh working conditions with high temperature, high material flow velocity and heavy mechanical wear.
5. Energy Saving Effect
With low thermal conductivity, magnesia spinel brick reduces outward heat dissipation of kiln bodies. While protecting kiln lining, it lowers the surface temperature of kiln shells, cuts fuel consumption of kiln operation, and realizes energy conservation and consumption reduction for cement, steel and glass factories.
Typical Industrial Application Scenarios
- Cement Industry: It is the most widely used scene, mainly applied to transition zone, burning zone and rear transition zone of NSP cement rotary kilns, solving lining peeling problems in temperature alternating areas of cement kilns and realizing long-cycle safe operation of cement kilns.
- Steel Smelting Industry: Used for inner lining of steel ladles, electric arc furnace covers and open hearth furnace tops, resisting erosion of molten steel and steel slag, improving the continuous casting cycle of ladles.
- Glass Manufacturing: Applied in regenerator linings of glass melting furnaces to cope with high-temperature alkaline flue gas erosion inside glass furnaces.
- Non-ferrous Metal Metallurgy: Lining materials for copper, aluminum and zinc smelting furnaces and rotary calcination kilns.
- Other High-temperature Furnaces: High-temperature tunnel kilns, heating furnaces and industrial calcining kilns in new energy material production linesthermaxcel….
Product Classification & Selection Suggestions
According to different magnesia-alumina ratios, magnesia spinel bricks are divided into two mainstream types for customers to select according to working temperature and erosion environment:
- High magnesium spinel brick: High MgO content, stronger alkali resistance, suitable for cement kiln burning zones with severe alkali erosion.
- High alumina spinel brick: Higher alumina proportion, better thermal shock resistance, applicable to cement kiln transition zones and steel ladle linings with frequent cold and hot alternation.
For cement kiln transformation projects, we recommend high magnesium magnesia spinel bricks for firing sections and high alumina spinel bricks for transition sections to balance service life and comprehensive cost.
