Chromite Sand: High-Performance Foundry & Refractory Industrial Sand
What Is Chromite Sand?
Chromite sand is a premium natural mineral sand mainly composed of iron chromium oxide (FeCr₂O₄), processed from high-purity chromite ore through crushing, washing, magnetic separation, drying and precise sieving. As a professional industrial refractory and foundry material, it features stable chemical properties, excellent high-temperature resistance and unique physical advantages, and has become an indispensable core material in precision casting, metallurgy and refractory industries worldwide.
Core Properties of Chromite Sand
The superior performance of chromite sand stems from its unique physical and chemical characteristics, which perfectly solve common casting defects and high-temperature application problems in industrial production.
First of all, it boasts ultra-high refractoriness. With a melting point above 1850℃, it can withstand the high temperature impact of molten steel, molten iron and high-alloy liquid metal without softening or deformation, adapting to various high-temperature casting and metallurgical environments. Secondly, it has extremely low thermal expansion coefficient, which effectively avoids mold deformation, cracking and dimensional deviation of castings caused by thermal expansion and contraction, greatly improving the dimensional accuracy of finished products.
In addition, chromite sand has excellent thermal conductivity and rapid heat dissipation performance. It accelerates the cooling and solidification speed of molten metal, refines the internal structure of castings, and enhances the mechanical strength and surface finish of workpieces. Its stable chemical inertness ensures no chemical reaction with carbon steel, stainless steel, ductile iron and other molten metals, effectively preventing sand sticking, penetration, scabbing and other casting defects. Meanwhile, the material features high hardness, good wear resistance and strong erosion resistance, with long service life and low loss rate in continuous industrial use.
Common Product Specifications
Our chromite sand is strictly graded and customized for industrial scenarios, with mainstream stable specifications to meet diverse production needs. The mainstream Cr₂O₃ content is stably above 46%, with low impurity content, few silica residues and high purity. Common particle sizes include AFS 40–60, AFS 42–58, AFS 50–70 and other conventional grades, covering fine sand for precision core making and medium-coarse sand for mold surface sand.
All products adopt standardized washing and magnetic removal processes, with uniform particle size distribution, clean surface and good fluidity, which can perfectly match resin no-bake sand, sodium silicate binder, shell molding and various casting molding processes.
Wide Industrial Applications
1. Foundry Casting Industry (Core Application)
Chromite sand is the preferred facing sand and core sand for high-end casting. It is widely used in the production of carbon steel, stainless steel, manganese steel, ductile cast iron and high-alloy steel castings, especially suitable for large, thick-walled and precision castings. It can effectively eliminate surface sand sticking and metal penetration defects, reduce casting polishing workload, and significantly improve product yield and surface quality.
2. Refractory Industry
With outstanding high-temperature stability and slag erosion resistance, chromite sand can be used as refractory aggregate and filler for industrial kilns, high-temperature furnaces and metallurgical lining materials, improving the overall high-temperature resistance and service life of refractory layers.
3. Functional Industrial Materials
Processed fine-grained chromite sand can be used for wear-resistant and anti-slip engineering materials, friction accessories such as vehicle brake parts, as well as auxiliary raw materials for glass and ceramic manufacturing, relying on its high hardness, wear resistance and stable chemical properties.
